Chiropractic Helps Woman Get Pregnant

Dr. Behrendt led a study with 15 women who struggled with infertility, some for more than a decade. Of these women, 14 became pregnant. Dr. Behrendt says “the chiropractor identifies spinal distortions, which are called subluxations, and once they were detected and corrected, the fertility function improved.”

When we go back to how the body works in the first place, through the function (or malfunction) of the nervous system, we can see why reproductive organs function better.   If the spine is misaligned or nerve supply is impinged in anyway, this can affect any organ or system in the body. When nerves are able to do their job, the whole body works better. Put simply, it’s about function.

Frustrated Parents Turn to Chiropractic for Chronic Ear Infections

When you come to our office, you see a children’s table and toys in the corner. At first glance, one might think that this is because the kiddos that come see us can entertain themselves while mom or dad get adjusted. However, the truth is parents are hearing about some alternatives to the mainstream approach to ear infections and other chronic challenges that our children face.  Many parents feel highly encouraged to just give antibiotics by their pediatricians and family doctor, and they are hearing about the poor affects antibiotics do on the system and the gut in general.  Perhaps there is a better way to find the cause of the problem!  There usually is, and looking to causes is always a good idea, especially as it relates to our child’s health.  Here is a quick video that demonstrates the effectivness of chiropractic care and chronic ear infections in children taken from the news.

Healthy Regards,

Parkinson’s Patient Helped with Chiropractic – A Case Study

The Journal of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research on March 14, 2011, published a case study documenting how chiropractic care helped an elderly woman with Parkinson’s disease symptoms. The authors of the study noted that, “Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by resting tremor, bradykinesia (slowness of movement), rigidity, and postural instability. An estimated one million Americans live with Parkinson’s with approximately sixty thousand new cases diagnosed each year.”
In this study, a 67-year-old woman came to a chiropractor with complaints of weakness, tremors, scoliosis and rigidity due to Parkinson’s disease. Her problems began five years earlier, and it was at that time that she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. The woman’s history also notes that she has a history of migraine headaches, nervousness, right shoulder pain, dizziness, constipation, and osteoporosis. Due to her dizziness and balance problems the woman would fall almost daily. The case study reported that due to the severity of her condition, she was missing work and had trouble performing daily activities.
A full chiropractic examination was performed which determined that there was abnormal nerve system function due to an atlas subluxation complex. A subluxation is when one or more of the vertebrae is out of a normal position and affecting nervous system function. In this case, the authors noted that it was the top bone in the spine, the “Atlas”, that was the subluxated vertebrae and causing what the authors termed, “aberrant neurological function”.

Care was initiated using specific forms of chiropractic adjustments designed to correct the subluxation found in this case. After one month of care, the patient reported a 60 percent improvement in weakness, and a 50 percent improvement in her tremors. It was not until the third month of care that the patient could report a 30 percent reduction in her rigidity. After 6 months of chiropractic care, the woman reported a 70 percent improvement in mobility and a significant reduction in the number of falls she was having. The study also reported that the woman’s quality of her life had improved as the woman noted an improved ability to perform activities of daily living, including her work.

Resolution of Night Terrors and Headaches with Chiropractic Care – A Case Study

Compliments of Michigan Chiropractic Pediatric Association

The April 26, 2011, issue of the scientific periodical, the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health, published a case study documenting the case of an adolescent girl with headaches and night terrors who was helped with chiropractic care.

The study notes that several previous studies on the subject of headaches and children showed that a high number of children who suffered from headaches also suffered from sleep disorders such as sleep walking, nightmares, and leg movement.

In this study, a 10-year-old girl was brought to a chiropractor suffering with daily headaches that began when she was
two and a half years old. She was also suffering from sleep disorders including sleep walking.

The young girl’s medical doctors tried to find the cause of headaches by ordering blood work and an encephalograph (EEG) to rule out seizures. The encephalograph and blood results were normal. Since reading seemed to trigger the headaches, the medical determination was that she was reading too much.

Her sleeping problems began when she was 7-years-old. According to her mother, every night her daughter would wake up several times screaming and would sit up in bed or be found walking or running through the house.

Chiropractic care was initiated for correction of subluxations that were shown to be present upon examination. Postural evaluations performed before and after each visit showed immediate improvement in the girl’s posture after care was initiated.  Thermography and Surface EMG studies were performed on a regular basis, and verified nerve system function improvement as care continued.

On the girl’s first reassessment, she reported that the headaches were greatly reduced in frequency and severity. She also reported that she was sleeping better. The study notes that after a month of care, there was a significant reduction in headache symptoms, and complete resolution of the girl’s sleep disorders and night terrors.

In their conclusion, the study authors, Danita Thomas Heagy D.C., and Candice Warren, B.S., wrote, “Resolution of headaches and sleep disturbances presented in this case study suggest that chiropractic adjustments may be beneficial in adolescents who suffer from similar symptoms. Reduction of vertebral subluxations, in this case, were effective in the reduction of headaches, sleep disturbances, and musculoskeletal abnormalities.”

Chiropractic Helps Patient with Brachioradial Pruritis, Vertigo, and Neck Pain – A Case Study

Compliments of the Michigan Chiropractic Pediatric Association

The Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health, April 26, 2011 issue, published a case study documenting chiropractic helping a woman with Brachioradial Pruritis, neck stiffness, and vertigo. Brachioradial Pruritis (BRP) is a nerve condition of the upper extremities characterized by intense itching, burning, and tingling sensations that often prevent the suffering individual from sleeping.

In this case, a 37-year-old woman went to a chiropractor for the symptoms of BRP. The woman described her condition as an intermittent bilateral itching with burning sensations to her arms for the past 9 months. She noted that she was getting progressively worse, and was now at the point that she was unable to sleep for more than 4 hours a night due to the intense itching. By the time the woman went to the chiropractor, her condition had gotten so bad that her lack of sleep affected her ability to care for her young children as well as work as a registered nurse. Additionally, her arms were itching so intensely that she would scratch them until they would bleed.

In addition to the severe BRP symptoms, the woman suffered from neck stiffness and vertigo (dizziness). The study reports that she was taking non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) several times per week for the neck discomfort. In the previous 6 months, she had also experienced 3 or 4 episodes of vertigo so severe that it caused nausea and vomiting. In her history, it was noted that 8 years earlier she fell down stairs injuring her head and neck, causing immediate numbness in both arms.

A chiropractic examination showed positive findings in postural abnormalities, thermal scans, spinal x-rays, leg lengths and ranges of motion. It was determined that this patient had a vertebral subluxation of the first bone in the neck. Care was initiated using specific adjustments designed to correct this subluxation.

The results noted that after the woman’s first adjustment, her dizziness had stopped. After the second chiropractic adjustment, her symptom of itching diminished significantly that night. After her third adjustment, the woman stated that she was able to sleep for more than 6 hours without the discomfort of itchiness. After being under chiropractic care for 2 ½ months, she reported that all of the BRP symptoms had resolved. Three months into care, the study reported that the woman had a normal neck range of motion, no muscle spasms, and a 70 percent reduction in neck stiffness.

In their conclusion, the authors wrote, “Dramatic improvement in the symptoms associated with the condition is noted following the introduction of upper cervical chiropractic care, concomitant with a reduction in vertebral subluxation.”

Thyroid Disorders and Chiropractic Care

Compliments of YourSpine.com:

It is estimated that between 1 percent and 4 percent of adults have moderate to severe hypothyroidism, and 10 percent to 12 percent have mild or subclinical hypothyroidism.

Symptoms of hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) include: fatigue, weakness, cold hands and feet, low body

Interference in the Central Nervous System can cause Thryroid Malfunction

temperature, dry sparse hair, dry skin, weight gain despite loss of appetite, poor memory, low sex drive, slow pulse, low blood pressure, and menstrual irregularities, to name a few. Symptoms of hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) include: weight loss, increased appetite, restlessness, nervousness, irritability, over-activity, increased heart rate, heart palpitations, increased sweating, tremors, shakiness, double vision, and protrusion of eyes.
How Chiropractic Care Relates to Thyroid Disorders

Evidence supports that certain cases of thyroid disorders may result from the malfunction of nerves in the brain and spinal cord that control the thyroid’s production of thyroid hormone. Whether too little or too much thyroid hormone is produced, the abnormal level can be due to a malfunction between the brain, pituitary, spinal cord, and thyroid, as a result of spinal subluxations (spinal distortions that irritate nerves). Chiropractors help restore normal nerve function and communication, thereby allowing your body to work normally and naturally.

Ligaments tell a story in back and neck pain, too.

Many of my patients, including myself, has some degree of spinal instability. This is where the ligaments have been damaged (from past injuries) and the spine becomes instable . Have you ever seen one of those plastic pieces that hold pop cans together? When you stretch one of the openings out too far, it doesn’t come back, or return to its orginal form.  If you tried to put the can back in, it would jostle around, right? Your bones, spine, and posture can tell a story, but so can the ligaments which hold it all together. Ligament damage is one of the most commonly overlooked injuries in the spine.

A solution to find these common problems: Get a Digital Motion X-Ray study performed.  Many of our patients say they have tried everything and had all tests done, however, they find that Digital Motion X-Ray study is crucial in diagnosing the situation and generally our office becomes the last stop.     to take an accurate look at the function and integrity of the joints in their natural motions. This motion testing is like a “videocamera” x-ray, so to speak. It can look inside right at the moment you are in pain and see what’s going on. It not only looks for malalignment, but malfunction, more importantly. We live in motion, and most times, are in weight bearing positions. However, as a rule with many other types of diagnostics, the patient is told to hold still, don’t move, and is not in a weight bearing or functional position. Big problem! This is why the Digital Motion X-ray is an incredible technology. It’s like having eyes inside the spine, and seeing the joints in their full life expression and motion. For more information on the Digital Motion X-Ray, please visit our website.
